Another Day
Story by: Cynergi

Synopsis:
Erica and Cody Lebeck. A pair of young Siberian Husky Siblings and the only two known survivors of the Mars 4 tragedy face off against an ancient threat in the depths of space. They have only each other with love as their only hope. A fight for their own survival becomes a battle to protect Earth from a NanoVirus that turns all it touches into raving mad beasts.

Another day....    Another evening spent alone.....    With only Myself to keep me company....
It is a brisk, warm Mid-Summer’s night. Almost like the one you hear about in Shakespeare’s writings. It was a long and rough day for me. Typical in my life. Being 18 years young can be such a pain sometimes though I have no desire to grow old just yet. That will come in due time. Still there are moments where I can kick back and enjoy life much like I am right now. The house is dead quiet on this warm Saturday night. For once I can bask in the silence with nothing more than a vivid imagination to keep me occupied. Imagination is better than reality sometimes...heck almost all the time. And tonight I am imagining something of a fantasy of mine. One that stays with me a lot in my young years. The warm night has already stripped me of my clothes. My thick fur is enough to fend off any chill in the night’s breeze through the open window of my room. My bed is soft and warm. Here I feel at total ease and peace. A little lamp at the side of my full sized bed dimly lights the room in a dull amber glow. I start out on my stomach with my arms tucked under my pillow. My soft blue eyes closed as my imagination takes flight. This is my release from the stress of everyday life. Here we go.............

I imagine a male stepping quietly into my room. He is tall and strapping. A well built and strong form cast in the dim glow of the lamp. Chiseled chest and powerful arms. He is quiet. Not saying a single word as he enters. A quiet little yip escapes my lips as my stimulation begins. I like to start out nice and slow. Taking my time. I raise my haunches a little. Not a lot. Just enough to get my right hand back there. I start off rolling my pointer and middle fingers softly over my petals. My tail curls back tight to my right side. In my imagination he is slowly stripping now. I can almost feel him watching me. Enjoying the show before him. A few moments pass and he is stripped down now. Fully naked standing at the foot of my bed. I look back over my left shoulder at him with a needful, hungry look in my eyes. He climbs onto the bed just behind me and I get oh so excited imagining him getting closer. My fingers leave the warmth of my petal and lightly drift to my swelling clit. My sensitive bud already starting to ache with anticipation. Fingers merely touching it send shivers of pure pleasure racing up my spine. I rub real slow still taking my sweet time. I imagine him leaning in to sniff me now. His warm exhales drift slowly over my pink petal causing them to gasp a little. I rub just a tiny bit faster now getting more excited as I imagine him drawing closer yet. I feel that long tongue of his suddenly roll over my wet pussy. He makes it painfully slow. So slow I can almost feel each taste bud on that tongue pass over the tip of my clit. My first pant escapes past my lips as my ears pin to my head good and tight. My heat starts to rise now. Each moment gets me hotter and hotter. I part my knees wide now. So wide I lower my haunches closer to the mattress with my knees are out wider than my shoulders. My curled tail Curls even more until it comes almost full circle. In my mind he laps at me a few time for good measure. Making sure I am good and wet. I imagine I can smell his musk now. It is strong and nearly intoxicating. My clit burns as I slow my rubbing a little. I can’t rush. I must relish every possible second I can. I sigh nervously. Tension in my lower regions grows as my sexual need rises. He is right behind me. Oh god, I can feel him getting over top of me to mount! My body aches I shove my ass up as high as I can get it. My right middle finger presses light to my wet entrance. In my mind his throbbing cock presses to my opening. His powerful form over top of me. He has me now. I cannot escape him. Strong hands grip the top of my hips as he rubs his cock up and down my petals slowly. I don’t get to push back. He pulls me back. My body instantly tenses and then, after a moment, just as suddenly relaxes again under his firm grip. My fingers slide in slowly. He mounts slowly. Pushing in slowly taking the time to enjoy my needy cunt. The first finger is joined by another. The girth of his cock now in me. My body trembles submissively under him. I can almost hear him laugh a little as he slams home. Three of my fingers slide inside now. My tender walls stretch causing my muscles to close slowly around my digits. My fingers become damp as the fur on them soaks up my dampness. My breathing turns erratic. My scent fills the room making it all the more real for me as my imagination now takes me away from reality. He holds it in for a few seconds. Letting me know he is in charge here. I moan in approval. My need for my imaginary lover now greater than my awareness of the real world around my real body. My fingers begin with a slow pace. I keep them bent slightly to brush the lower rim of my swollen clit. Adding the needed extra stimulation. I imagine his thick, throbbing cock pumping slowly back and forth with the motion of his hips sliding in and out of my tender cunt. My knees begin to weaken. He knows this and grips a little tighter around the tops of both hips telling me to stay in place. My thighs want to give out now. I fight to remain in position. Suddenly, after a few moments more, I roll onto my right side. In my mind he yanks me over to spooning. One strong hand grips and hoists my left ankle high into the air above us. Now he presses against my back and leans me against his massive chest. My fingers change angle a little, pause for a moment, and then I resume pumping them in and out. He pulls my ankle back and down. My left leg now over my left side spreading me good and wide. My fingers start to plunge. Now I can freely pick up the pace as I imagine my lover doing the same. I tremble uncontrollably now. My excitement builds as my fingers slam in and out of my needy cunt harder and with a slowly increasing pace. I can here him starting to grunt almost in time with my heavy panting. He tries to keep his breathing timed to mine. Drawing us even closer together than would normally be possible. My nipples hit the cooler air and ache as they harden instantly. I am so into it now I am almost lost to the real world. I feel him panting as hard as myself. My body feels like fluid now. All I can feel is him against and in me. Nothing else seems to register now. Ears barely roll forward now while my three fingers pound my sopping pussy relentlessly. My teeth grit tight as I feel him fucking me like a dirty little mutt. Then it happens. Just as I get settled into his rhythm he changes positions again. He yanks my leg back and sudden rolls me onto my back as he moves to kneel between my legs. He does this without pulling out. I feel his hard cock twist inside me! OH GOD! I nearly cream myself on the spot! No...I fight it back. I wanna hold out just a bit longer now. He takes the backs of my knees one in each hand and pins against my soft breasts. I have my left arm around the backs on my knees while my fingers pump my wet pussy even harder and faster. I reach in a little deeper and find it. My sweet spot. I always know right where to hit and how to hit it. My back arches at the slightest little touch there. My jaws hang open with my tongue hanging out one side of my mouth moving to my panting. Fingers are just soaked now and my wetness is starting to run down the crack of my ass. The warm feeling of my spunk running over my tight pucker is wild and erotic! He lets go of my legs and leans over me resting on his hands and knees. I plant my feet on the bed and shove my pelvis and pussy into the air. I am shaking so bad you can see it plainly even in the dimly lit room. I Go knuckles deep now. My fingers straining to reach in as deep as possible. I let my finger tips drift back along the top of my pussy to make sure I get my G-spot on the way out. Oh...god. I can’t hold on any longer. My free hand pinches and plays with my aching nipples in the final few moments. Right at the peak he suddenly pulls out of me. My orgasm is so explosive my finger are actually forced from my pussy. What a treat! I can imagine him shooting his semen all over my pussy and pelvis as I cum all over his cock and balls! Spunk flies all over the bed under me! My legs finally give out and my ass thumps back down to the bed. My hand coated with my own spunk as I lay on my back trying to catch my breath. My Imaginary lover has already vanished into the shadows of the room as I lay quietly among the rumpled sheets of the bed. My eyes flutter a bit as I slowly nod off riding out the last few moments of afterglow.

(Two solid hours later)

I am forced awake by the approach of a motorcycle. Eye snap open as I sit upright almost automatically. Brother is home! A hint of a smile across my lips as I roll quickly off the bed and to my feet. Fuck the underwear! I hop into a pair of pajama bottoms and a heavy t-shirt. Elated to finally see him get home. Oh......A little background. Cody is my brother and he is 5 years older than I am. I am 18 years today. Cody is the only family I have in this world. Mom, Dad....pretty much our entire family was nearly wiped out near 4 years ago in the Mars 4 disaster. Not going into that right now. Too many bitter memories and shed tears. Cody and I were the only survivors from the northern sector right before the whole colony imploded. To this day the disaster’s cause remains a mystery. My bare feet thump loud enough to wake the dead from their sleep as I hit the stairs and race to meet him at the door. I have learned to really appreciate Cody. For the last 4 years he has been there for me through everything. He come in the door just in time to feel me tackle him with a hug. 5 years older and a lot stronger than I am he barely moves off his feet before he lifts me off the floor in a bear hug. 5 years ago this would not have been the scene. I would have been sleeping in my room or tossed on the couch watching tv. My only greeting to him would have been a glance and maybe a wave. There would have been nary a word between the two of us at all. Things have changed since our return to Earth 3 years ago. I made diner hours ago, but he was called to stay late tonight so I have some for him fresh in the fridge. Ever gentle he sets me down with his usual pat on my head, knowing full well I love that, Before he set his bag down next to the door and walks away to the kitchen. Tonight’s special was my homemade meatloaf, his favorite so far, with a side of lumpy mashed potatoes. Hey they aren’t any good any other way other than lumpy, dammit. Doesn’t take more than a minute to hear the Hot air oven kick in as he warms his dinner. Leaving him to his meal I go to the living room and flick on the TV to catch the news. As usual it is nothing more than the weather report, sports, and politics. A few reports of accidents that are nowhere near where we live and other people’s problems. Still I like to watch to catch up on Global and System, Solar System, events. This is how our evenings usually go. Nice and quiet. We live in a small housing development just outside New York city. Thoughts of moving inside the city limits did not sit well with either of us. Having spent most of our lives in the quiet of the Mars 4 colony has turned the both of us off to the ideas of clustered city life. Cody is a fighter pilot at the new Earth Defense Alliance base, Emerson Air Field. Did I say Earth Defense Alliance? Yep, yep. You bet your sweet ass I did. The United States, Canada, Russia, and England decided to pull their collective military might to form a global military run collectively by the representative country’s defense leaders and a specialized committee with members from each of the represented countries who join or are already members. Needless to say it is one cluster fuck trying to fuck another with all enlisted and commissioned personnel crammed in between and no lube to be found. Still it is a functional effort that Cody chose to be part of and he seems happy enough. That is all I care about. When he is happy so am I.. Yeah...I am happy. For the first time in years I can honestly smile and laugh. There is a slight tingle between my legs. Still a little tender and still a tad horny from earlier. Luckily I am not in heat just yet. Few more weeks and I may have to lock myself in my room with the air freshener. It will be my worst and, from what the Sex Ed counselor told me, when I will be most receptive to a male’s advances. Shaking it off I return to my TV viewing. My mind was not on my situation right now, but on the trip we had planned for weekend. Cody was under a lot of stress and pressure lately and he took leave for a four day weekend. We had planned on going out camping. I was looking forward to it. time away from friends and the rigors of everyday life to retreat the quiet of the woods was like a dream come true. I loved spending time with Cody. I deeply regret ever taking him for granted. I had most of the stuff out in the garage. I would have packed the van myself had I not.....well.....gotten distracted earlier and feel asleep. That was ok though cause he said he wanted to pack it himself anyway. he had a deep need to make sure of everything on his own and I didn't want to deny him. "Hey, Cody?!?" I did not wait for his answer. "I forgot to pack the van!" I called back half craning my head sideways over the back of the couch. I heard the sound of a fork or spoon scraping over a dish. " No worries. I will get to it before we leave tomorrow." His tone sounded more amused than anything. " I am sorry. I was just feeling lazy." I was genuinely apologizing. " I know." he replied. sounded like he had food in his mouth that time. " Huh? How could you kn......" I caught my own scent in the air. Damn! he must have smelled it the second he walked in and didn't say a thing. He was a real sweety. "What was that, sis?" He asked hearing me cut myself off. "uhm....Nothing." I swear I was so read in the face my cheeks almost caught fire.

It was no more then a few moments later when he came striding out to the living room and hopped over the back of the couch plopping his ass right next to me. 7 pm. This was time to unwind and watch some tube. Tube being a slang for TV which had passed well beyond the old projection TV they had back in the day. And if you are thinking Plasma screen? Heh yeah right. Maybe about 50 years ago. These days everything is High Definition Holographic. New age shit, baby. " So? How is school going? " He asked all nonchalant. he was always asking how school was. I only snort lightly. " It is the same as the last time you asked, bro. Dull, boring, and educational. And yes that Doberman is still eye balling me every time I bend over. You know, Hank Walsh? The one I wanted you to kick the living shit out of?" I heard Cody chuckle. " Will you get over that, Sis. I am not gonna 'Kick the living shit' out of anyone......Not unless they try to touch you...well that is...what I meant to say is....." Good grief i had to shut him up so I did it the only way I knew how too. I gently grab his muzzle with my right hand and clamp his mouth shut. " I think I got the idea, Bro." with a smile on my lips. I let go of him and he only smiles. It was almost unreal just how close we had become. This time about 5 years ago we would have been arguing and taking pot shots at one another. it is amazing how far we came in such a short time, but all we had now? Was each other. And in the coming days ahead? That was exactly what we would need............

(6:00 am)
A........Rustling noise. Faint, but enough to rouse me from my peaceful slumber. I had my face buried in the pillow. Damned that Steak and Potatoes dream again. Under the covers I stretch out a bit and roll to one side yawning hard. Moments later I am heading for the bathroom and a bit of relief. Gotta pee. On the way I spot Cody’s room. He is already up. Should have guessed he would be. Probably getting the bike put away and the van ready. A few minutes later places me in the kitchen and, sure enough, Cody is busy putting our bags in the van. He must have gotten up way early because he looked utterly handsome. A good night’s sleep and shower does wonders for that male I swear on my own grave. While I, on the other hand, look and feel like a zombie. Breakfast is on the table and still warm. Bacon, eggs, and toast with just a little butter and lots of strawberry preserve. Just the way I love it. Cody knows me well. I give him my sweetest, tired looking smile as he bids me “Morning, Erica” and it still looked like I was dead to the world. “ We will be leaving around seven thirty. So you have just enough time to get in a hot shower and get ready.” he states boldly with a smile as he walks by with the last tidbits of luggage. Lucky for him I am pretty quick when I get my shower. I'll be ready at seven fifteen. Breakfast was short work. Was done by 6:30 and already in the shower. Done with the shower at 7:00, Brushed out my fur and hair and slipped into something comfortable by 7:10am. Little Did I know at the time......we were never going to leave on out trip.
7:12 am The First day.
Just as I was about to help Cody finish up the phone rang. We already took guesses at who it was by the third ring. There were very few people it could have been. Cody answered as I took the time to begin locking the house up. I was not even paying attention when I heard him. “ What?......When?......I understand, Sir.........Yes, sir...........Understood, sir.......” there was a click as he slowly hung up the phone. In the last three years I have come to an understanding of Cody. An understanding almost so finite that I could read the solemn look on his face at that very moment as I looked into his eyes. The trip was off. “Cody? “ I actually choked that out because the look on his face was deadly solemn. His hand was still on the phone as if waiting to pick it up again for some unseen call about to come. He let his hand fall to his side almost limply. That call had lasted less than a minute, but it seemed Cody had already gotten what he needed. He stood upright and the look on his face changed instantly to something serious. That scared me more than what was about to happen next. “The trip is off. We have to report to the base ASAP. Lock the house and meet me in the van. Quickly! Go!.” The sudden snap in his voice meant something was about to go very wrong in the world. I did not even argue. There was never any point to it. It took all of about a minute to shut everything off and lock up tighter than Fort Knox. Windows, doors and the Alarm were all locked and set as we set off in the van. It kept ringing in my head. “We have to report to the base” it was never ‘WE’ it was always ‘I’ or ‘Me’ when he got orders to report. Never ‘We’. To make the matter seem even more urgent Cody was not following the speed limit. There were no cars on the road. At first I thought it was more because of the early morning hours, but I slowly began to realize this was not the case at all. We never go near the city so I have no idea what may have transpired within the city limits. The trip to the base took about 20 minutes and we were there before I knew it. Cody was silent the whole time. Something was on his mind. I knew better than to pry so I only patted him on the leg and smiled when he looked. His silence finally broke. “I am alright, Sis.” he said with a somewhat forced smile on his lips. A bold faced lie if there ever was one. Still....his concern over me was the last thing I wanted him worried about. It would take precedence when time came for it to be foremost on his mind. The base was probably the safest place we would ever be for a long while. We were not long for the Earth. Little did either of us know that though. In this time of peace there were things afoot that would threaten it. This is the case with all peace treaties, talks, agreements, and accords. There was ALWAYS something ready to threaten that peace. Peace is a pipe dream that only lasts as long as both sides are smoking it on equal terms. Once that changes peace falls apart VERY quickly. The E.D.A has but one enemy. The Colonial Defense Fleet. The Earth Defense Alliance defends it’s namesake and the Lunar Colonies. Mars and two of Jupiter’s moons, Ganymede and Io, are under the protection of the C.D.F and well as several if not all the Orbital Colonies around Saturn. To Date it had been 21 years, 2 months, 15 days since the colonies declared themselves independent from the Earth. So far there has been no actual open conflict between the E.D.A and the C.D.F forces though there have several rather intense encounters that the media got wind of. The C.D.F was investigating the Mars 4 disaster jointly with the E.D.A. Our parents were archeologists from Earth participating in a joint research project that discovered the remains of an ancient city buried deep beneath the surface of Mars before the disaster. As a result of them being Earthers we were sent back to Earth after they died. Ooooh.....I have to rub my temples. All this thinking about the past gives me a headache. That and the stress of this situation only adding to the tension. Still wondering what this whole ‘We’ thing is all about. I can hear the roaring of turbine engines as we get further and further inside the base perimeter. Close to the Flight line now. I have been here before on a few tours. A few time with my Bro and once or twice on a school outing. Needless to say I was in familiar territory and feeling just about as uneasy as could be. I know Cody was not at liberty to tell me what was going on and I respected that, but forgive me if the silence left me more then a bit unbound. Our trip was canceled which meant this was something of a disturbing importance and the look on his face was telling me volumes of nothing but bad news on the horizon. I hated bad news. I shift uneasily in my seat as the van rolls up to the Flight line gate. Maybe now at least some answers will be answered. One can only hope...
(2 hours later 9:15 am)
*sigh* They have been in there for the last two hours. The Briefing room doors were locked up tight and, despite my best efforts, all I could hear was a bunch of mumbles. I could make out the urgency in the tones of the voices inside, but not whatever was being said. From what I have seen and heard just about every pilot had brought their Families to the base. I was not the only one here. Difference was I was insistent about not leaving Cody’s side or being put too far away from him. His superiors had allowed me to stay with him right up to this point. I was allowed no further. I chocked it up to our status as Mars 4 survivors. A bit of fame neither of us had ever asked for and exploited quite often as we deemed fit. At least for now. Of Course I understood there was now an excellent chance he would be deployed and I would have to go wait down in the hangar with all the other Family members that had been brought along. Families are not allowed on military maneuvers or aboard deployed vessels. Still......this was very strange. “Why would any of the families have been brought here? What was going on? Why was the based on high alert?” All questions I would, later, find out I would not like the answers to. There had been no indication of any hostilities and this was way beyond the scope of any planned deployment as far as I could tell. I could feel my stomach start to churn. What was going to happen to us?

(22 days 2 hours ago High Mars Orbit)
Chaos had ensued. There was no longer any order. Overhead the Klaxons blared. Everything was red. It was all you see. From the red lights pulsating to the Blood on the walls. It was hard to believe that these corridors were bleach white and quiet only hours ago. Chaos had no need to operate within a certain time frame. Once it had started it spread like a wild fire throughout the ship. They had brought it on board. Brought it here to study. It was the cause of the Mars 4 colony disaster. The reason 120,000 people had perished. Now it was here. And it was happening all over again. 4 years the thing had been buried deep in Mars’ crust. Far below where it had impacted on the planet. It had impacted so hard that the entire northern Sector of the Mars 4 colony was obliterated even though it had not been the center of the impact. They never bothered to search anywhere but around the immediate Perimeter of the colony initially. Not until a full geological scan of the planet’s surface had been conducted. That is when they found it. 22km North of the colony’s northern most perimeter. More than 2 miles below the surface of the planet. They had no idea just what they would find there. No idea what was waiting. The vixen clutched her side as another wave of agony washed over her. She was injured and bleeding badly. Her clothes were badly tattered and bloody. The medical bay was gone. Now the scene of a maddened slaughter as crew members began reverting to a feral state and attacking each other. There was some sort of defense mechanism on the pod. At least that is what they called the thing. Some kind of small space craft more advanced than anything she had ever seen before. It was no bigger than a coffin and appeared to be able to fit only one person within it. They did not find a body inside. Instead they found some sort of defense system. It vaporized everyone in the room when it was first opened. Took day, but they finally figured out how to disable it. That proved to be a huge mistake. This defense system was not protecting any pilot or passenger. Not as obvious as that since there was no pilot to speak of. It was protecting a weapon. She had not been there when they found it. A very small canister of sorts no bigger than a normal sized soup can that contained.....nothing. Or at least that is what they thought. She did not discover the truth of what was in that small canister until it was far too late. The vixen heaved again. Spitting up her own stomach fluids and blood. She lost her footing and slumped against an inner bulkhead. Her head spinning as she grimaced from the taste of her own fluids. Her white lab coat was marred and stained in the blood of her colleagues. They all went mad and tried to kill her. The same thing that had turned them into maddened freaks had spread to the rest of the ship now. Most of the crew were lost. Turned feral by what had been released or killed their own crew’s hands. Many wandered the corridors on the upper decks still killing anything or anyone unfortunate enough to come across them. She barely made it down here. She fought to her feet and tried to walk again. She was heading for the shuttle bay. her only means of this death ship now. She knew now she was never going to make it. Her injuries were too severe and she was now doomed to die here. She would never make it off the ship alive and she was too badly injured to change into.....into one of those deranged things her friends had become. Her mind wanders now. She relives those last few moments in the lab. Her friends and co-workers clawing and biting at her. Tearing away clothing and flesh. Life was slipping away. She had barely managed to escape by sealing the doors behind her as she ran for her life. She left the 4 of them sealed in an air tight lab. They would be dead before they could get loose. To bad the whatever was in that canister had already gotten into the ventilation. She heaved again spitting up more stomach fluids and blood. Now she was stumbling unsteadily. Her strength was fading fast. She tried to utter something. As if anyone would have heard her mumbling in this abandoned corridor. She had sealed this corridor as well. She knew she was dead anyway, but didn’t entertain the thought of one of her fellows trying to devour her remains. She had managed to remain calm long enough to get here. A result of her severe injures no doubt, but now her running was done. “ N.........Nano........ “ She slumps all the way to the floor on her stomach and silently lays in a growing puddle of her own blood. Agony and pain subsides. Her vision blurs as the blood stained corridor fades into eternal darkness. Life slips away.................. Now the ship slips out of orbit on random heading. Several attempts are made to contact the runaway ship by orbital traffic control. The Navigational Computer acting on unknown command. Slowly the ship slips off into the inky blackness of space heading for a destination. Heading for Earth.........................................................................................

(8:15 am Current time)
I had played Sherlock Holmes for little under two hours now. wandering around the hangar talking to other people gathered here trying to figure out what the hell was going on. It just seemed so odd that family members were being drug along in whatever was going on. Everyone here was immediate family. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands, sons, and daughters that sort of thing. About 15 minutes ago some Gunnery Sergeant came out of one of the doors from somewhere upstairs and did his best to assure us that everything was going to be ok and we would be safe here, When asked what we were supposed to be safe from he merely told us that it was not up for any kind of discussion and then left through the same door he entered. After which I noticed that now every door leading out of the Hangar was now being guarded by armed MP personnel. The more I thought about it the less and less sense this was making. Now I was familiar with emergency protocols as far as the military was concerned. In the event of an attack immediate family members were evacuated to the base for protection. A benefit of being immediately related to military personnel. Now I was just getting uneasy. There was never any mention of having to stay in a hangar being guarded by armed guards. No I had this ebbing hunch that something else was going on. It had been  over 3 hours since they crammed us in here and all we knew was that several aircraft had been landing or taking off just outside those huge hangar doors. From the sounds of it they had to have parked several of them right outside those doors. For now we could only speculate as to what was going on. Most of the adults were grouped together over in one corner coming up with some rather outlandish ideas as to why they were keeping us here. Others were trying to comfort scared children while the rest kept an eye on the children who were trying to play. I was keeping to myself over near the main hangar doors. i was only worried about one thing right now. Finding Cody and getting the hell outta here. Good god I was starting to pant now. My hands shook ever so slightly with nervous energy. After a few minutes I was busy fussing with my tail. There was nothing wrong with it, but I this.....nervous habit of fussing with it when I was...well nervous. I would just sit there and try to separate the white hairs from the black and then the black from the dark grey. My ears were getting tired by this time. Panning in all directions listening for just about anything that would offer some form of clue as to why we were all stuck here. All I could hear was more speculation and the sounds of children both crying and playing. And of course I took notice of several males, roughly my age, eye balling the hell outta me from across the hangar. Two of them looked to be brothers of a mixed breed. Looked to be German shepherd with some collie in there somewhere. One looked too old and the other looked like he was gonna crap himself if I so much as smiled at him. I didn't pay them much mind, but decided to go find somewhere else to sit.  So I sauntered around for the best spot to wait. I wanted to stay where I could still see what was going on, but be left alone at the same time. Yeah.... In a hangar? That was about as possible as turning invisible though I did put a little more distance between me and those two gawking males over there at the other end of the hangar. Maybe it was because I was all alone or maybe they were just stupid, but they were slowly sauntering my way. Putting that, you know, I am soo cool hey look at how cool I think I am strut into play. As if, in the middle of all this shit, it was the perfect time to make a move on a female that appeared to be here all by herself. At least the older doofus was trying that. Junior just looked like he was going to faint dead cold the second I looked at him. They were just about on top of me when.......

"Erica!?!" came Cody's voice over my pounding heart. My ears jumped right up as I stood up to see him come through the same door that Gunnery Sergeant had. YES!!!! I completely ignored the two males almost standing right next to me. Right hand high in the air waving. " Cody! Over here!! " The ultimate turn off for any male looking to score? The older Brother. Smiling ear to ear as I happily saunter towards him and lock my arms around him with a relived hug. Just happy to have a means of escape from an awkward moment. That was about to be blown away though. Right behind him were several other military personnel who came out rushing for their own families. And none of them appeared happy. The reunion would have to be cut short as that Gunnery Sergeant and several higher ranking officers followed. I looked back at Cody. My blue eyes meeting his. That second I knew something was wrong. It took all of about 2 seconds for the hangar to hush to dead silence. We were informed of the news. Approximately 22 days ago a Colonial Defense Forces deep space research vessel had illegally broken orbit over Mars and set course for Earth space. All attempts to raise the vessel had been met with silence. 2 hours after it broke orbit it vanished from set transport lanes and has been missing until approximately 6 hours ago when Orbital tracking stations had picked the vessel up approaching lunar orbit. It wasn't alone. Apparently it was being trailed by no less than four C.D.F ships of the Lamda destroyer class. They attacked, but did not destroy, several E.D.A patrol ships that tried to approach to investigate. Any and all attempts to contact C.D.F command was met with silence. E.D.A leaders decided to declare this an act of aggression. Since that time 4 hours ago all E.D.A commands were put on high alert and only two hours ago 5 more C.D.F ships had arrived to escort the vessel now in orbit around the Moon. Whatever was aboard that vessel? The C.D.F was hell bent on preventing anyone else from getting their hands on it. The E.D.A, however, was not just anyone. Still they had to deal with at least 9 ships now and they still desired to try and defuse the situation. An all out battle over the lunar colonies was not something they really wanted over a research vessel's secrets at the moment. And though the C.D.F destroyers had attacked the patrol ships they inflicted only enough damage to ward the small craft off without causing any real damage or casualties. Which may have been the wiser choice since there are at least 40 E.D.A ships in orbit around earth at all times. Not just any ships either. Nova class heavy battleships, Norad Class destroyers, Fox Class missile cruisers, and at least half were Magnum class Gun ships. All were more than a match for 9 Destroyer class C.D.F ships. And those E.D.A ships could reach the moon in a matter of hours with their Sub-light drives. They made no effort to hide the fact that a tough stand off was brewing. Cody was to be deployed aboard the E.S.S Lexington. The Lexington was a class all her own and the single largest star ship ever built So big that she had to be assembled section by section outside Earth's orbit as there were no space docks big enough to accommodate her size. It took more than five years to put her together. She was 5300 meters long and just under 2000 meters across at her widest. Designed to act as a mobile command platform she was a floating city armed to the teeth and the E.D.A’s Central Flag Ship. She would be escorted by 5 Nova class ships ( the next largest class compared to the Lexington and comparable to the C.D.F Destroyer class ) Bismark, Longhorn, Yorktown, Dunkirk, and the Saratoga. This was going to be some sort of intimidation tactic. The Lexington alone would put down a lot of pressure for those C.D.F ships to back off or break for home. My mind drifts off as I lose interest in the proceedings. My mind was more focused on the fact that Cody was going to be taken away from me and sent into space while I was forced to stay with friends or in the shelter on base. I sigh out loud which draws Cody's attention. Suddenly I feel a strong hand on my left shoulder. Without even hesitating I spin on my heal and throw my arms around his waist and hold tight not wanting to let go. I am such a pup when it comes to matters like this. I knew what it meant when he joined the military. Sooner or later he would have to be deployed to fight. The thought of him facing danger was a ghost that lingered forever in the back of my mind. I feel his arms around me now as he returns the embrace and, for the moment, I feel secure again. I am such a sap...

(4 hours 34 minutes ago) Lower lunar orbit. Colonial Defense Forces Deep Space Research Vessel Curzeman.

The silence aboard the ship was awkward. Very awkward. She had a crew of 350 personnel including the ten science teams when she was deployed to Mars. Her corridors should have been bristling with activity and yet they were now dark. Only the emergency lighting bathed the dim corridors in a haunting red glow. The blood stains showing as dark blotches on the, normally white, bulkheads of the corridors. The scene slowly went from awkward to unsettling and eerie. The klaxons still sounded though  The foot steps fell as quietly as they could make them in those heavy environmental suits they wore. 10 of them had arrived via a small transport shuttle only 30 minutes ago and in that time they were met with....nothing....until just now. The lower decks around the shuttle bay appeared to have been evacuated or abandoned completely. They had to exit the shuttle and open the shuttle bay manually then guide the craft inside and re-seal the bay. They had come up from there. Sent to discover just what had transpired aboard the Curzeman. Three decks up they found the first corpse. A young vixen laying in a deep puddle of her own dried blood. Badly injured she had died from severe loss of blood. She was laying against the bulk head at the end of a trail of her own blood drippings. One of the team knelt down as best he could in the suit. A older male badger peered through the face shield at the fallen female before him. " It's Dr. Brothers. Sylvia Brothers from the Jupiter Station research facility " He commented in a gruff voice trying to look over to the team leader standing at point just ahead of the rest. The Dingo only passed a glance over the Vixen's remains. " 1 down......349 to go, Professor. Get up and leave it for the clean up crews to deal with when they get here. Those E.D.A Patrol ships we ran off will have bigger friends en route soon and we have very little time to secure the ship and get her out of E.D.A turf. " Captain..he scoffed quietly...in his mind he was already a General, Steven Everett and team leader. An asshat if there was one. " Let's go, people. We make the bridge in 15 and worry about the rotten meat afterward. " Having lived his whole life in space he had a real weak accent that made him sound ALOT like he was faking it. His tone was impartial. He didn't care what anyone, other than himself, was thinking. Orders were as simple as they could be. Secure the ship at all costs and the window for the success of that mission was quickly closing. Without even waiting he shouldered his rifle and trudged forward down the corridor. The others looking at one another and then at the corpse on the floor. All wondered what it was that gave her those injuries and if it was still close by. Everett took two more steps and half turned around. " Get a fucking move on!!!!!! " he sounded like a bitch hitting a bad heat as his voice squawked over the comms in the suits. Four of them, other than himself, were armed troops.    The other five were the science team and were unarmed. To him it was no better than being a babysitter. The scientists were going to want to stop and investigate every little detail they came across between here and the bridge. That was going to ebb away at his last nerve. if only they had allowed him his full detachment he could have simply come in and taken the ship. As of now it painfully obvious that something had gone horribly wrong. " Captain! " he felt a hand on his shoulder pulling him back trying to turn him around. " Captain we can't just ignore this. Something happened here and we need to find out what it was. " It was the Badger again, Professor Anderson. He growled and spun on his heals to confront the male badger. "Professor, I don't care about what happened and I don't care what caused it! My Job is too secure this heap and get her underway for Colonial space. Not sit here and get a fucking hard on over some dead bitch and her buddies. We do my end of the mission first and yours after! Now shut that big fucking trap of yours and get your ass in line with the others! We find a few survivors and you can sit down and have tea with them and talk about it. I don't give a shit otherwise." he bared his fangs quite plainly at the badger " Now get your fat ass in gear and shut up. " He snorted and spun back around shaking the old badgers paw loose from his shoulder and stomped down the hall. The dingo's voice still echoing down the corridor ahead of them. Anderson sighed to himself and grunted as he grabbed his gear and followed the others stopping only long enough to take one last look back at the dead vixen. " She was my best student. Such a shame. " he thought to himself shaking his head as he turned and followed the others forward.

Main power was out. The lifts were running on reserve power like the rest of the ship was. If the lower decks of the ship had been any indication that something was horribly wrong then what they encountered next would only cement that fact. The carnage was nearly unreal. As the lift doors slide open on the command deck they were greeted with the site of a brutal massacre. Blood was everywhere. The deck, the bulkheads and even the ceiling. Various body parts were strewn about the corridor leading to the bridge. The ravaged corpses of several unidentifiable crew members littered the path ahead. There were weapons laying on the ground with every indication they had been used. Spent shell casings and clips scattered about the deck in the puddles of dried blood and body parts. Everyone laying in that corridor showed the same signs as the vixen they left on the lower deck. Fur, flesh and muscle forcefully torn from bone. Urine and droppings mixed with blood and saliva. " Son of a bitch. " Everett nearly had to choke that down to keep the others from hearing as he stepped forward. he unshouldered his assault rifle and held it ready. Flicking the safety off he leveled the weapon out in front of him. " Safeties off! Check your targets and watch your aim! " He barked into his com feeling only a little relieved as he heard audible clicking behind him. He felt his tail frizz up even in the suit. " Bridge is 100 meters straight ahead, sir. " it was the Fox behind him. His Sergeant and he sounded shook up. They could all see pretty clear in the red lit corridor and few heaved in their suits. They could not smell the rank stench that permeated the corridor through their suits. The horrid stench of rotten meat and bodily fluids would have been enough to choke a whale at this point. They were almost there. He was almost there. 100 meters and they could get this ship underway. That was all he had to do. Then they would be able to deal with......whatever did this. "Buckle down and swallow it! Keep moving, that's an order! Too late to puss out now.” He stood aside and shoved his Seargant forward and waved the others along. 10 of them pressed slowly forward. Stepping over corpses, intestines, and various other remains. Everett silently cursed his confined helmet. His ears trying to pan all over to listen for anything, but getting only what his external microphone could pick up. Anderson looked about in disgust and morbid curiosity at the remain of the crew strewn out along the corridor. "What in the maker's name could have done this? They all look like they were.....half...eaten." a sudden feeling set in. As if he had just realized the danger they could be in. He stopped dead in his tracks. " Captain? We should turn back. " He only saw the Dingo spin to face him. That look in his eyes was enough to kill. " Bullshit! We have less than 100 meters to the bridge. Get your ass up here and keep moving, Anderson!" With that Everett spun back around and strode forward again. Every intersecting corridor was the same. They searched them carefully if only briefly. Strewn with the dead and signs of weapons fire. There had to be at least 100 dead bodies here. the Command deck was the smallest deck at the very top of the ship. All that was up here were a few offices for ship's operation and the command bridge at the very front, but close to a third of the crew was in here. the scene was one of a last stand. The thought stuck to Anderson's skull like a leech on a fresh wound. They were not alone. Something moved up ahead. They could not have seen it that well in the dim red lighting, but they did see the movement. " Movement! We got movement! " Everett heard his Sergeant bark suddenly. Instantly the moment became tense. "Switch to thermals!" Everett barked back already switching his helmet's visor display. " Holy......." In the Dim light they had not noticed the movement was not ahead of them.......it was all around them. At least 15 crew members could be seen only they didn't look like anything he had seen before. They all wore C.D.F uniforms or..what was left of those uniforms anyway. Their fangs were bared and they all looked like they had just come from a serious fight. Down on all fours or hunched over like they were going to pounce and attack. And more were slowly coming down the corridor from further ahead...15....20....then more. All had a haggered looked and a wild, hungry stare in their eyes. Foaming at the mouth and growling.

" Halt right there! C.D.F Captain Steven Everett 1st Company 2nd Jupiter Division! We are here on a rescue mission stay where you are! " He squawked through the external speaker of his suit. Rifle leveled at a pair of crew members just ahead of his position. The others got into position in a hastily formed circle around the unarmed science team. He could hear the others breathing hard into the mics in their helmets. " What the hell is wrong with them?"......" shit, shit, shit, we are surrounded "......."they look like they're fucking insane"......The voices of his team bounced around in his head until he was ready to snap. The crew was slowly closing in like a wild animal trying to stalk it's prey out in the open. " I said fucking halt! We are here to rescue you, but we will shoot if you come any closer. " Good god he thought he saw one of them smile at that comment. Anderson stood silent and dropped his gear to the floor as the other four scientists tried to huddle together in vain. " They can't understand you, Captain. They can only understand.... " he paused and looked at the already dead strewn about " ....that we are not one of them. " He finished with an eerie calm. Everett gulped hard and turned to look at Anderson. the look of horror in his eyes as he too realized......."Here they come!" the shout over his comm snapped him back to reality. The crew members, in a frenzy, came charging right at them growling and howling. " Fire! Fire! " he barked. His men squeezed the triggers....................

(10:32 Am Current time)

Erf........ I have spent the last few hours worrying myself sick over what just happened. Some morning this was turning out to be. The trip we had planned for months was shot to hell with one phone call, we had to rush all the way to the base, And now I was going to have to say goodbye to Cody for God only knows how long. Now don't fret about me too much. I was fully capable of taking care of myself and the house without Cody around. That hardly means I am willing to be alone that long. Think of me as a pup if you will, but I detest being alone for long periods. I thrive on having company. I am not an attention whore, but just having another person in the house is very comforting. Still....It was not just that he was going to be away for so long. I could not put my finger on it, but something else was eating away at me. Something just did not seem right and it was starting to get me worried. I was trying not to look worried as I knew it would make my brother uncomfortable. He was just as worried about me as I was about him. I walk next to him just outside the hangar. Watching a lot of tearful good byes. My heart sinks into my stomach. Cody can see the gloom hanging over me. His right hand finds my left. I look up at him trying to smile. "It's going to be ok, sis. You can stop worrying now." He says softly trying to hide his own concern behind his military bravado. I can see right through that. " I can't stop. " I squeaked trying not to sound concerned and failing hard at it. " Erica....... I will be ok. I promise. I wouldn't lie to you." He sounds a little more composed now. I come to a stop suddenly and hold his hand tight causing him to stop as well. I want to tell him how I feel. Tell him something more is bothering me. I want to tell him how scared and worried I really am. " I don't like this, Cody. Something about this whole ordeal feels.... " I hang my head a little and avert my eyes from him "....wrong. Really really wrong." Sounding like a pup again.....he was the only one I couldn't hold up the tough act with. There was silence. looking up slightly I could see he had a worried look in his eyes as well. As if to say he was feeling the same thing. "Yeah...." Cody half turns away to glance out over the flight line at the row of transport aircraft being loaded up in preparation for departure. " Something has bothering me as well. Something about this whole deal makes no sense. " He looks back with a deep gaze. He was serious. I knew that look very well. seen it many times in the last few years. I feel him squeeze my hand a bit. " Cody? " He hears me and seems to snap out of some trance. For a second he looks as though he totally forgot where he was and what he was doing. " It's nothing. Just a weird feeling we have been through something this before.....I...I will be fine, sis." Those are not very reassuring words in an even less reassuring tone. Not convinced he is stable I slide closer bumping my hips to his. "Hey." I give him my best smile. Trying to comfort him as much as he wants to comfort me. For a moment he just looks at me dumb founded and then finally smiles back at me. That was better and helped get rid of a little stress.

Behind us we could hear several aircraft engines spinning up. Two of the transports were ready to leave. Soon Cody would have to get on his transport and depart for the Lexington. His fighter was already on it's way to the ship. These days it was just quicker to load the fighters up on transports and fly them up in those rather than wasting more fuel to launch each fighter on it's own. Not to mention it meant that all the fighters from the squadron would arrive at the same time and be moved, in their own launch racks, right to the launch bays. Cody's grip just got tighter. In the four years since we lost mom and dad we had never been apart. I mean, we have been apart, but he was never deployed like this. Maybe one or two days for Squadron drills or movements, but never for a possible combat situation. All we had was mom and dad back then. Now we only had each other. I only had him. Most of our family was gone. My only two grandparents had passed away long before I was born. Mom was an only pup. Dad was an orphan who never sought out his parents. Cody was all I had left for family and he meant everything to me now. "Erica? I will be fine. I promise I will be back for you." He knew I was bound for the base shelters. No way they were going to allow a 18 year old to just go home with no one to keep her in line right? We hardly talked to neighbors and most of Cody's friends were deploying with him and no way I was staying with any one of his friends families. I did not want to be alone, but I refused to be a burden to anyone else. Even if they offered. " I know. " was the only things I could say at the moment. My mind was flooded with a million different things right now. I could sense Cody's lament at my reply. " Please don't do this, Sis. I need your support right now not you being stubborn. " His tone went way down. he was deeply worried about me being alone and he knew fully I did not handle charity that well. "I am not trying to make this hard, but seeing as how it already is hard I fail to see how our current situation will make it an easier." I felt like going off. God what was wrong with me. this strange feeling of anger and fear just slapping me right upside my head. I was angry that he was going away even if he was being ordered to do so. I was afraid that, once he was gone, it would be the last time I was ever going to see him again. Both emotions seemed to just well up all at once. It was enough to get me shaking in my boots almost literally. He knew it or, at least, I thought he did. With a sigh and the shake of my head I trod off ahead of him. "Erica......" it was a mutter and I only just barely heard him utter it. I didn't respond. I could not. Behind me I could hear the whining of turbine engines as they spun up. Our time was growing very short.............

End of Chapter 1

Another Day
Chapter Two

Anxiety had grown. It was now to the point of breakdown. It was now 57 hours since the Curzeman had arrived in lunar orbit. So far a brief skirmish had erupted as two patrol ships had been driven off by C.D.F vessels and there were now 20 of them orbiting the Moon and lunar colonies. All patrol ships had been ordered back to their ports to avoid any further confrontation. At least until the E.D.A Fleet could be re-deployed to deal with the incursion into Earth space. Still... the real question was not the fact that the C.D.F was in serious violation of the peace agreement, but why they were so bent on defending a rouge vessel that would, otherwise, pose no real threat. Was whatever was on the Curzeman important enough for them to risk a war? There was no doubt now that they intended to go that far. Members of the United Earth Council were still deliberating over whether or not to take direct action over the skirmish concerning the two patrol ships that had been attacked. Neither vessel had sustained more than minor damage and no casualties had been reported. It seemed as though the C.D.F vessels were content to escort the rouge Curzeman and had taken no actions against any other vessel whether it was military or not. The docked patrol ships had not been attacked even though the C.D.F vessels had flown right by the orbiting defense installations. Orders were to monitor the C.D.F only and not take any hostile actions as of yet. So far there had been no reason to violate those orders or to change them. The only change that had taken place was when a small shuttle craft had been detected leaving one of the Destroyer Class ships, now identified as the Bozeman, and headed for the Curzeman some 35 hours ago. That shuttle had yet to return to the Bozeman and he Curzeman had not altered her course at all. So far all attempts to make any kind of contact with the C.D.F ships had failed. There were no responses to any hails. A time limit of no more and no less than 72 hours had been placed on the matter unless the C.D.F replied or began attacking. After 72 hours, should the C.D.F fail to respond to attempts at contact, the matter would be declared an act of aggression and the United Earth Council would be forced to take a more aggressive stance against the incursion it was now highly probable that this was going to be the case. The most likely course of action would be for the council to declare this an act of aggression. There would be a formal and public declaration on open subspace broadcasting channels and another deadline would be set. Most likely an additional 24 hours. If, at the time of that deadline, the C.D.F or the Colonial government fails to respond it would be declared and act of war. At that point the E.D.A ships would be forced to engage and drive off or destroy the C.D.F ships. Such an act would almost certainly guarantee an all out war between Earth and the outer colonies. Something that, hopefully, neither side really wanted.

At any rate the lines were being drawn and the picture would soon be complete. He was silently cursing himself as he nervously paced back and forth across his small office. General Flynn W. Wilcox. A 25 year veteran in the E.D.A and easily the most recognized tabby in the E.D.A. He had almost single handedly pioneered the colonization of Mars as the first and, unfortunately, only neutral colony. Mars 1, Mars 2, Mars 3, Mars 4, and Mars 5. He headed the colonization of all 5 along with High ranking officers from the Colonial forces nearly 15 years ago. Now he faced a very difficult choice. One that could plunge the E.D.A into an all out war. He was acting advisor to the United Earth Council on this incident. So far he had managed to convince the council to have patience and refrain from taking any aggressive action. This served both to give the colonials more time to respond and, hopefully, avoid conflict as well as to allow more time to get the fleet into position to gather more intel. This would also allow the fleet to make a more decisive strike that would be quicker and cleaner than going in blind. White and tan patches with just hints of gray in his fur. His wife loved to tease him about the gray. He could never see it though. he was still to young to be gray. At least in his mind anyway though he would often claim to be too old to deal with things like this. He scratched behind his right ear. an itch that would not seem to just go the hell away. he reached one side of the room and caught a glimpse of a glint from the four stars adorning his right shoulder. he stopped to look at the faint reflection in the window. Still fit and trim for a cat his age. He looked good, but felt ugly right now. Golden eyes narrow slightly at the reflection and he snaps his head away and turns from the window feeling somehow disgusted. With a huff and a small mewl he strolled calmly back over to his desk and quietly sat down at his chair. "Fifteen hours..." He muttered in a soft yet annoyed tone to himself. he was already running on less than 5 hours of sleep and could not bring himself to laying down for a few hours. he was far too anxious for that now. What he wouldn't give right now to be snuggled warm in bed with his wife making passionate love rather than pacing the floor of his office in nervous anticipation every 5 minutes. Even now he was tapping his foot! "Damn those Colonial bastards." He turned his attention towards his computer monitor which now displayed the same image it had been displaying for the last 40 hours. A live feed of the Curzeman from a surveillance satellite in asynchronous orbit with the vessel. "What secrets are you hiding from us? Why are you here?" His 6 million dollar question would be answered and he hoped it would be the Colonial government or the C.D.F that gave him those answers.

At this very moment the Bismark, Longhorn, Saratoga, Dunkirk, Yorktown and the Lexington were holding position halfway between earth and the moon. Their advanced halted by the arrival of additional C.D.F forces. Since the Lexington's launch 11 more ships had appeared in lunar orbit. Strangely enough not a one of them was so much as 200 km away from the Curzeman. Something else that had been perplexing UEC. Why hang back so far? They wanted the ship bad enough that they openly attacked two E.D.A patrol ships risking open conflict. They blatantly sent additional ships in as reinforcement. It was clear they did not intend to allow E.D.A anywhere near the ship if they could prevent it. So why give their prize such a wide berth? It didn't make any sense. And then there was the single shuttle they had sent over? Why only one? and why had it not returned nor had the Curzeman changed course? If something was wrong aboard the ship why not send more personnel to correct the problem? Unless... unless the problem was not something that could be solved so easily with a bit of applied force. Maybe it was the lack of sleep or just the sheer, intense boredom, but Wilcox was deep in thought. These questions kept plaguing his mind and it all boiled down to one final question. He knew the Curzeman was the research vessel the C.D.F had sent to aid in the investigation of the Mars 4 colony disaster. In fact it was the ONLY research vessel period investigating the disaster. Now his only question was... What had they found? He snorts lightly and mewls at the image on his computer screen. " What secrets are you hiding, girl? What brought you to our neck of the woods?" He mutters to himself again. He was just about to get up and pace the room again when his office door opens. In steps his Executive Officer, Colonel Marly. Now she was definitely a welcomed site.

Elizabeth Ann Marly. A 36 year old Doe (Female reindeer to be exact) was his XO and most trusted friend. He had been her commanding officer years ago when she was still only a butter bar LT. The lady quickly became well known as she rose quickly through the ranks. She was hard, she was serious, highly intelligent, very easy on the eyes in that uniform, and a natural leader in her own rights. She was donned in her normal attire. A set of tight Dress Greens and a piss cutter cap. Her birds were polished and her ribbons all neatly aligned. She had always been a bit on the neat side. Her brown eyes met with his and he knew instantly she had some news. She smiled a little as she watched him sit up with renewed interest. She slowly approaches his desk and stops right in front of it. "The Council sends new orders, General. The file should have reached your terminal by now." And then, as if on command, he heard his terminal chime for him. A message for his eyes only. He was almost purring as he would finally have something to do. He could only pray it was orders to call the fleet back because the Colonials finally wised up. He was about to be disappointed heavily. With a few taps on his lit display he accessed the message with baited breath:

TOP SECRET: For your eyes only.....

To: General Flynn W. Wilcox, Commandant Earth Defense Alliance
From: Franklin C. Brothers, Head Council, Secretary Of Planetary Defense
Subject: Change/update to current orders outstanding

Orders are as follows:
Deadline will occur in approximately 14 hours 30 minutes from time of reception of these orders. Upon reaching said deadline an official decision will be made determining this to be an ACT OF AGGRESSION AGAINST THE EARTH AND OUTLINED TERRITORIES by the Colonial forces. Upon this declaration your orders are to deploy the following E.D.A vessel to Lunar Orbit:

E.S.S Lexington (Central Flagship/Command Ship E.D.A)
E.S.S Bismark (Nova Class)
E.S.S Saratoga (Nova Class)
E.S.S Longhorn (Nova Class)
E.S.S Dunkirk (Nova Class)
E.S.S Yorktown (Nova Class)
E.S.S Acer (Norad Class)
E.S.S Boston (Norad Class)
E.S.S Dakota (Norad Class)
E.S.S Orlando (Valiant Class Heavy Carrier)
E.S.S Akbar (Mercedes Class Light Carrier)
E.S.S Fox (Fox Class Missile Cruiser)
E.S.S Taurus (Fox Class Missile Cruiser)
E.S.S Gorgon (Fox Class Missile Cruiser)
E.S.S New York (Fox Class Missile Cruiser)

These vessels will be in position prior to the Initial deadline and ready for deployment. The Order in which these vessels are to be deploy is being left up to you as this council trusts your judgment in this matter. No hostile actions are to be taken upon completion of deployment unless enemy forces act first. After which you are authorized retaliation measures in accordance with the outlined Peace Agreement of 2091. Any act of hostility on the part of any colonial ship will be declared an official ACT OF WAR at which point your orders will be subsequent to change. That is all for now.
End of line..................................

He sighed loudly enough that Marly looked at him with some measure of surprise. " Nothing has changed? " she asked trying not to sound too serious. Flynn only shook his head. " No. The council's plan is still going ahead. Which means those damned Colonials have not responded or replied yet. Idiots. what is it they want on that ship so bad that they would risk a conflict like this? " He sighed slumping backward in his chair again. Marly merely put her palms up and shrugged at him. " I wish I had that answer for you, sir. " she now sounded almost as disappointed as he was. "And they are sending 15 ships in against 20. Even with the Lexington there it will still be a mismatched fight if one ever breaks out. " And he was hoping this would not lead to that. "General?" Marla Strode around the desk Watching his reaction. " Our Pilots and crews are far better trained than any colonial ever was or will be. Our ships are just as sophisticated if not more so than theirs are and probably more heavily armed than their most powerful ship. To top that off they are in OUR space. If anything they are the ones who are outmatched. Not us. Not to mention WE have YOU and they don't. " Obvious compliments that were directed at trying to cheer him up a bit. It was not working. Flynn merely shifted in his seat. " Never underestimate your opponent, Colonel. It seems they are not willing to underestimate us otherwise they would not have sent in this many ships. They know we will try to drive them off. They are aware we are aware something is amiss aboard the Curzeman and that we aim to find out just what that something is. They are fully aware of the ships that are massing at Point Lamas at this very moment. This situation can and, most likely, get ugly and get ugly real fast. We must exercise the same thing they are at this very minute.........Caution. And we must be the more cautious. They are spoiling for us to try something." He was rubbing his temples now. Marla merely sighed lightly having failed to lighten the mood. "You are right, sir. Of course you are, but at the same time you also need to have more faith in our own men and machines..." She found herself cut short when he almost snapped at her "I do have faith! I know what those ships and their crews can do! I also know what the Colonials can do with what they have! We are not talking about some retarded, inbred degenerates here! We are talking about highly trained military members who are very capable in their own rights." He was calming down now though still appeared to be aggravated. Marla took a few wise steps back around his desk. She knew better than to get the old feline really worked up once he got going. Flynn took notice of her retreat and sat back firmly in his chair. " I...I am sorry, Liz. I didn't mean to snap like that. This whole ordeal just doesn't make 100% sense to me. It is driving me nuts." He heard her chuckle a little and looked over at her. "No apologies needed, Flynn. This ordeal seems to have a lot of people up in arms." She turns her hips slightly sitting on the edge of his desk with a quaint smile and a wink. God damned she looked good. He found himself staring for a second. Her uniform was tight and the way she was sitting on his desk only made it hug her form even tighter. "Mmmmm" He purred right before he realized where he was and snapped out of it. Marla merely smiled slyly at him as she watched him snap in and then snap out of his trance.

Caught staring he meekly tried to pass it off as nothing. He cleared his throat and reached for the monitor in front of him with his left hand turning it for her to see. "Since I have already seen this and I trust you fully....." Quick change of subject that he couldn't tell didn't really work. She feigned interest and turned her attention to the screen. It took her only a few moments to look it over and read it through. " Well....The orders are simple enough on their end. Dumping the rest off on us is typical Council bullshit. Nothing new there." She was trying not to sound too uninterested. Trying not to draw attention back to herself and the fact she was now staring at him. They had known each other for a few years now. About 3 years almost to the day. And in that time they had gotten to know each other a lot better than most knew. Nothing they had ever done together ever got her promoted, but that had never been her aim anyway. They were lovers in the most basic of senses. They had slept together several times. She was married and so was he yet they still found themselves drawn to one another more than once. Right now he was under a lot of pressure and stress and it was distressing her to see him like this. "Hey.." she whispers sweetly getting off the desk and strolling around to his side again. " Liz? " He only watched her. To dumb founded to say anything else as he watched her unsnap the two top buttons of her blouse...........

Fall back. Retreat. His radio, somehow being jammed, was dead and when his ammo ran out so would he be as well. The narrow corridors gave him little maneuvering room. He simply back peddled quickly trying to stay the distance between him and those….things. Like raving beasts they pursued him. Shouting at him in blind rage and lust for blood. He snapped the assault rifle back into the pocket of his shoulder and popped off another round. The round quickly found the skull of one of his pursuers dropping the male fox right to the ground to soak in his own brain matter and blood. Head shots only now as ammo was getting critically low. He wasn’t going to resolve to go down this way. Like his men who had been torn to shreds. At least those who had not turned on him. His mind raced with a million possibilities. They may be zombie like , but they still breathed, had heartbeats, and they were thinking. He knew full well they were trying to rally together. Surround him in the narrows of the corridor. Cut him off from escape before they closed in on him. They were leading him into a trap. Had they really wanted him dead they could have tried to kill him many times by now. Instead they hung back pursuing only close enough to keep him moving. By now he had realized his men were simply fodder to them something that was merely in the way of what they really wanted. They wanted him. Another leaps to the fore and he spent the last rifle round splitting the things head down the middle. The rifle was discarded as he drew one of the two pistols he carried with him. Was that their plan? Chase him all around the ship until he ran out of weapons and ammo? Run him until he could run no more? There was no hope of making it back to the hangar now. No way to reach the escape pods that were just one deck below his position. There were simply far too many to take on even with his pistols. The very second he had to reload? They would have him flat out on the spot. He took a few more steps back and leveled the pistol in front of him. His pursuers merely slowed a bit as if sizing up their options. They outnumber Everett 20 to one with more of them flanking him down the side corridors. Not like this, not this way. Alone and out numbered with no hope of survival in sight. He refused, even now, to admit his defeat. He cleared his mind for a second. He was on the command deck. The Bridge, officer’s quarters, Captain’s Quarters, and a Small armory were all on this deck. He knew for certain the armory was ahead of him and to far to reach right now. The Bridge was his only hope at the moment. This was a research vessel, but there was a minimal chance there was still a small arms weapons locker there. There wouldn’t be much there though. Maybe a shotgun and a few pistols if they had not been taken by fleeing crew members trying to escape this things. That is if the locker was there at all. Still it was far better odds then trying to punch through the raving lunatics in between him and the armory.

Everett spun back around to glance down the corridor behind him. Still empty. “What are they up too? Why haven……” It dawned on him. He wasn’t being chased at all. They really were leading him into a trap. He was being corralled down the corridor leading to the bridge. He heard the snarling and growling growing closer and closer pulling his attention back to his pursuers. The rage and hate in those eyes almost sent chills down his spine. He dropped his pistol. His pursuers crept even closer now, but refrained from doing more than that. They weren’t going to kill him, at least, just yet. No there was something else they sought to do and he now knew all his answers lay on the bridge. “So that’s the game now, is it? You want me to go there? “He half turned around to point down the hall to a bulkhead door about 60 feet away. The sealed door that lead right to the bridge. They only snarled and growled louder maybe trying to convince him to keep going or die where he stood. “Yeah. Fuck you too.” Everett snapped back at them. He wasn’t about to just cave in and go like a good puppy. Ever defiant of his odds should he choose to fight he was not stupid either. If it bought him any time, if it got him close enough to the communications station on the bridge, he would have to play by the rules laid out for him for now. “Right. Fuck this noise. “ he raised his pistol again. If they really wanted him on that bridge he wasn’t going to make it easy for them. Even if it was his only hope at the moment he wasn’t going to be pushed around. They couldn’t kill him if their goal was to get him to that bridge. He slowly drew a bead on the lead male. A young skunk from the looks of him. “I’ll do you a favor and end you existence.” he stated coolly with a small smile drawing over his lips. He was just about to pull that trigger all the way back when he heard the ship’s intercom squawk to life overhead. That drew his attention enough for him to ease off the trigger and lower the pistol again briefly.

“ You would be doing the lad more of favor by lowering your weapon and calmly proceeding to the bridge, Captain Everett. I don’t believe you honestly want to die by being torn to pieces and digested in the stomachs of your former peers. “ The voice was that of Captain Frost, the ship’s captain. He recognized it almost immediately. Almost because it also sound somewhat strained and forced. Not in a natural or panicked tone either. “ What in the bloody fuck? “ Everett neatly croaked in both bewilderment and surprise. “ An interesting question. One that will only be answered when and if you decide to join me on the bridge though I do recommend haste. My minion grow hungry and they will not wait forever for you to decide. If you wish to live you will come to the bridge and come soon. “ The intercom squawked again and went silent. Whatever Frost had to say, he intend for it to only be done in person. Everett took one last, long look at the skunk again. He didn’t need to look to his left or his right to know more of those things were now surrounding him and cutting off any path of escape. All route except the obvious one. Reluctantly he holstered his pistol. His suit suddenly felt heavy and useless. Those things had ripped the suits off like tin foil from his men. With as many of them as there were it was nothing short of an easy feat. “Fine. We do this your way then.” He defiantly points at the skunk who hisses loudly at him. Everett turned and marched down the corridor the full 60 feet. His pursuers, seeing him go, merely stood right where they were and let him be. There task completed they had only to sit there…for now.

Everett, not convinced he was doing the right thing anymore, approached the bridge door and punched in a security code. After a few beeps the door slid open to a grisly site. The bridge was the scene of a slaughter. Every bridge station had at least one corpse draped over it, slumped in the chair, or laying near it. Every station except for the Captain’s central command station. That was virtually untouched and…. “Empty” Everett stated with a slight gasp. It screamed at him that this was a trap. He quickly reached for his pistol again stopping only after seeing something…someone out of the corner of his right eye. There he saw a shadow standing on the loft of the bridge. The Loft was a raised section of the bridge used for observation as well additional science stations with direct access to all the ship’s external sensor and any installed science equipment for the mission. Everett turned his head slightly getting a better look at Captain Frost standing there in the shadows. The bridge lighting had been turned down to a dim low light setting. Everett knew almost instantly the figure before him. “Long time, Benjamin.” Everett tried to sound friendly, but under current circumstances it was rather hard to maintain the pleasantries. “Captain Everett..” The figure replied as he finally stepped forward. An older brown bear, around 55 years old, strolled down the ramp from the loft into the dim lights of the bridge. He was dressed in his uniform. A drab green get up closely modeled after the service greens of the former United States Marine Corps though much looser fitting. “You will remove your helmet now, Captain Everett. The air on my ship is quite breathable and I’d imagine your supply of oxygen is quite low by now. That was an order and not a request by the way.” Frost hardly even turned his head to look at the dingo as the bear strolled to the forward section of the bridge to gaze out at the stars. Everett paused. After seeing those things out in the corridor he was unsure he should do ask Frost asked. “ Come now, Everett. I have not turned into one of those things now, have I? Please…..take off that blasted thing before you suffocate in it. “ Again Frost did not so much as turn around to look. The dingo kept his eyes locked on the Bear in front of him as he reached up and unlocked the clasps that held his helmet to his suit. There was a small hiss and a pop as the helmet finally came off. “There now. Breathe in the fresh air and relax. You are more than safe here with me.” Now Frost spun fully around to face the Dingo.

Everett was already sizing up the situation. Those things out there. The crew of this ship somehow transformed into ravenous, maddened creatures. Mere shadows of the people they had been only days ago. A Captain who seem completely unaffected and eerily calm under the circumstances. The Dingo was already sniffing the air. Sure enough it was fresh air though mixed with the stench of the corpses around him. He almost slid his helmet back on, but that meant he would only run out of air that he may yet need should this situation turn away from his favor. He also knew that something was different and also very wrong with the captain of this ship. This raised his suspicion even more. So much so that it was evident even to Frost The bear raising an eyebrow and smiling at him as if he had expected this. “You….suspect I am not really the man you believed me too be? Is that what is getting you so worked up, Captain Everett?” Frost’s tone was way too calm now. The kind of calm that sent chills up your spine. Everett couldn’t find words to convey what he wanted to convey. Instead he slowly reached for the pistol strapped to his right breast plate. Frost merely tilted his head a bit and smiled.
“If I wanted to cause you any harm, Captain? You would have been writhing in pain by now. Come now. Let us talk like adults. You certainly have a few questions and I, fortunately for you, have the answers you want.” Frost said calmly and in a more friendly tone. It almost disarmed the dingo, but he held his resolve and kept his left hand on the pistol. “Who are you really? You….you smell like Benjamin, but something is off.” Everett made damned sure his tone was anything, but friendly. Everett bared his fangs a little. A show that he was not going to let his guard down, even for an old friend, for a fraction of a second. Frost seemed to be interested in his reaction and sized the situation up for himself. “Very well. I am Benjamin Frost though not the person he once was. The Benjamin you knew is dead. I have replaced him. I can assure you that I have all of his memories and experiences….and his body, of course.” Frost placed his hands palms up and stretched out his arms in effort to show what he meant. Everett had enough already and grab the grip of his pistol. Before Everett could draw it out he was stopped dead in his tracks. Frost stood right before him. Arms outstretched and a defiant look on his face. He wanted the Dingo to shoot him. This wasn’t merely him showing off. Frost’s last statement was meant to push the dingo’s last button and it nearly worked. Frost merely smiled ear to ear. “Not so foolish I see. I was right to spare your life, old friend. Yes. You and this one were indeed long time friends. Shooting me would have certainly meant your doom. I am the only thing keeping the minions outside that door. I die…..so do you. Then again how could you even know whether your shot would kill me?” He bellowed triumphantly. Everett smiled and laughed at him which confused the bear a moment. “Who said I would have only shot once? At any rate I am not concerned with your drones out there. You said it yourself. YOU have the answers I want.” The dingo was the one smiling ear to ear now as he pointed towards the bear. “You spoke of talking like adults. Not playing little mind games.” Everett snapped lightly hoping to reroute Frost and hopefully buy himself a little more time to find a way to either over come the bear….or kill him. Frost nodded sagely at the dingo in defeat. “Indeed I did. I imagine you have more than a few questions about what all has happened aboard this ship.” Frost motioned towards a door to the port side of the bridge. “Why don’t we talk in private. That is the Bridge Officer’s lounge. We can talk there.” Frost takes a few steps towards the door. Everett, wary of his company, reluctantly began to follow him into the lounge………

Earth

I could still see the azure clear skies in my head. My head that now pounded much like two burly guys pounded a wooden stake into the ground with 10 pound sledge hammers. I could feel this sickening spinning sensation coupled with a few bumps and jars hear and there. The vision of those azure skies finally gave way to a low red lighting and the silence was broken a bit by the sound of nearby voices. I wanted to move and get up, but I found myself unable to do so. Hazily I struggle a bit, but, not finding the strength I need, soon surrender to my apparent restraint. The room still spins even as my vision finally manages to start clearing a bit more. I am greeted by a dimly lit space crammed with medical gear and one or two Corpsmen strutting about in the dimly lit confines of this space. I try to think, but it is hard and I can’t seem to focus. Vision fades in and out and the voices come to me as not much more than random mumbling and inaudible speech. Then I hear him. Though I can hardly make out the words I know full well the sweet sound of his voice. “Cody?” That was what I was thinking, but I doubted it came out as much more than a strained whine or at least some form of structured drivel. I force my eye to focus as much as they can taking notice of a blotchy, yet familiar form coming to hover over me. “Cody?” the words sounded meek that time though I was aware they were a few fold clearer than before. A soft touch comes my forehead as he brushes a few strands of stray hair from my still unfocused eyes. Ears slowly perk to his words as I hear him speak.

“Hey.” he pauses briefly attempting to allow that one word to sink in before continuing. “You suddenly passed out in front of me. Smacked your head pretty good on the ground when you did. You have been out for the last 5 hours.” I could hear him clearly, but I could not focus on what he was saying. Incoherent and still woozy from just waking up. “wha…” I felt my head thump the pillow as I tried to lift it. Strength was fleeting and I could hardly move without this intense throbbing. My mind was racing as I tried to recall the last few moments of my waking memory and came up only with a blur and a blank. I can feel the timid vibrations in the bedding and suddenly I am aware that the gravity in this place is nonexistent. At that same moment I feel one of the straps securing me to the bed pulling me back down. I am no longer on the surface of the Earth where my last vivid memory, my anger at Cody, placed me. “Erica? You’re on the Medi-Vac transport headed for the orbital dry docks. We are both going to the Lexington, sis. Can you understand me?” He spoke ever so softly. Concerned and trying to be sympathetic. It took me a second or two to process what was being said and comprehend it. Finally I was staring to piece the situation together. I recalled the talk we had and how I had become upset with Cody and what was going on. Then there was darkness followed by…..a very faint memory hit me. There was something else. Something….strange. I remembered it only for a moment or two. A voice calling to me from afar. Very faint and strange yet…..familiar. My thoughts were once again interrupted as I heard my brother speaking again. I only nodded trying to give some indication I could hear him even if I could only understand a portion of what he was saying at the time.

The shuttle buffeted again as it passed through the upper layers of the atmosphere and into the vacuum of space. We had achieved orbit and changed course to head out to higher orbit and the dry-docks where our ship was waiting. The Lexington was far too big to dock at the orbital facilities and so was forced to remain just outside Earth orbit where she was supplied by smaller cargo ships and medium transport vessels. She was our ride to the moon. The world begins to fall silent again. I feel my fleeting strength fade s my head begins to pound relentlessly. Once again I hear that faint voice calling to me. So sweetly and so tempting to my ears. Cody merely sighs and sits back. Seeing me once again passed out. Once of the crewmen, a medic, which was on the transport with us, places her hand on his shoulder. A female, white rabbit, smiles re-assuring. “She has a concussion. Once we get her aboard the Lexington we will have the proper facilities to care for her. She will be fine as long as she remains sedated and rests until then.” Cody only nods at the words not really finding any real comfort in them.

In high orbit the traffic thins out. This area is normally used for staging area. Here ships often prep jumps or military vessels will gather for movements or deployment. Smaller patrol ship also use the higher orbital areas for drills or changing shifts before either heading into lower orbit or heading out further on their routine patrols. The small medi-vac transport moves easily through the open space. In another 15 to 20 minutes the Lexington will be in range. Cody begins to get a bit anxious. He always did when he was worried. The other crewmen begin preparations for docking with the Lexington. The transport was small enough to land aboard the ship, but that would take far longer than it would to simply dock alongside, disembark crew and equipment, and then leave. Head pounding I silently slip back into darkness again. I hate being sedated……..

Then light. Faint at first then it slowly grows until it is all I see. The darkness abates as I float aimlessly awash in brilliant white light. Now the voices start in. They too start out very faint and grow slightly louder as time passes. Or at least I think time is passing. It feels as if I am dreaming, but only the voices are here along with myself. They seem to be aware of my presence as whatever topic had been discussed seemed now to turn towards me. “She is…..aware.” I can’t make out the sex or location of the voices. They come from all around me in the light. “yes….it has taken so long, but she is finally aware we are here. The other has not yet realized our presence. This will complicate matters somewhat. Still she is the one we really need at the moment.” I shake my head a bit trying to clear out a few cob webs and try to make sense of what is going on. “Confusion? …. No. These drugs they used. They are interfering with her mind…..with our link….with us.” A brief moment of silence follows as if they are thinking or summing up the situation. “w…Where are you? Who are you?!?” I bark out trying to get in the middle of this somehow. I finally manage to orient myself again….or did I? It was impossible to really tell when there was neither ground nor sky here in this place. They stay silent only making me feel as if I was now the subject of an intense observation. “You already know us. You have been with us since……The crash.” A soft reply. As a mother would speak to her young daughter. “We have been with you and the other…waiting for you to finally become aware.” I feel my heart sink a bit. A vague answer if ever there was one, but there was only one crash I was aware of. “ The Mars 4 colony……” Dredged up memories are always the worst. The fight with Cody. The hurtful things I had said. Then the loud boom and the screaming. People crying out as the colony decompressed. The ear splitting sound of the air rushing out into deep space. The strange thing was? Both Cody and I were supposedly found in the center of the impact zone and we are both still alive and unconscious. “ Yes. Memories. She remembers only so much, but it is enough…for now. She is not yet ready for the truth, but soon….” The voices finally fall silent. My questions still unanswered or at least that is what I want to believe though some part of my mind seems to believe the vague answer they gave. Whatever remaining consciousness I had finally slipped away……..End of this day. On to another…..
